The Romans had been excellent soldiers and believed Mars, "The god of War" to be very important.
They believed him to be the father of Romulus and Remus, the founding fathers of Rome.
When Romulus and Remus had been babies, they were left to die.
However they were discovered by a mother wolf, who suckled them. Romulus provided his name to Rome.
The "Campus Martius" or "field of Mars" had been next to the river Tiber in in ancient Rome.
