She wouldn't permit Odin to have his way with her.
So Odin feeling quite angry about this, put her to sleep in a ring of fire atop a mountain peak, with the intention that she might only be woken up by a hero fearless enough walk through the fire ring.
Along came Sigurd who had a magical ring and was adamant about being engaged to her. He loved her tremendously.
