Venus is the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
She at first a vegetation goddess and patroness of gardening and wineries.
Later on, under Greek control, she was equated along with Aphrodite and had taken up most of her aspects.
Her cult descends from Ardea and Lavinium in Latium.
The first temple that recognized Venus goes back to 293 BCE, and had been inaugurated on August 18. Later, on this day the Vinalia Rustica was recognized.
